Samuel Clarke was an English rationalist philosopher and theologian who influenced Mary Moody Emerson, an aunt of
Ralph Waldo Emerson and a vital forerunner of
American Transcendentalism. Clarke wrote mainly on moral philosophy and natural theology, strongly admired Isaac Newton, and was denounced by some religious people as unorthodox.
