Philostratus was a Greek biographer, Neoplatonist, orator, and sophist. Among his writings are
Lives of the Sophists,
Gymnasticus, and
Heroicus. He also wrote the life of
Apollonius of Tyana, a charismatic thaumaturge of the first century, which emphasizes the behavior of Apollonius as a sophist.
