Friedrich August Gottreu Tholuck was a prominent Lutheran theologian who taught in Berlin and Halle and wrote
Commentary on the Gospel of John in 1826. Although he was not as “heretical” as some other German theologians, such as
Johann Gottfried Eichhorn, he had some importance as an influence on the New England Transcendentalists.
